Doggie Theatre

Adrian had a dog named Goofy, which is probably part coyote. Six months ago or so, the ranchers were given a chow, but they also already had a big black lab mix. The chow, named Chavo (which is also one of Ruben's nick names from when he was a kid), was originally pushed around by Goofy, but at some point Chavo fought back and chased Goofy off.

While we were waiting around, and Ruben went into the room to take a nap, I had been sitting on the porch trying to read. I was getting really distracted by the goings on - the horses neighing, the cows mooing, the chickens clucking - not your typical sounds for a city girl. To my left I heard some birds making noise, it was a bird call I had heard but not one that I recognized. When I got up to look closer I found that it was a small flock of California Quail. I wandered over to see if I could get closer.

All of a sudden, I was surrounded by Chavo, and three other dogs (one of which turned out to be Goofy). The other two dogs were a big white male lab, and what I believe was a small black and white mix dog in heat. She was following around the white male with her tail between her legs. The big white dog and Goofy scared me. Both seemed unpredictable, and both were growling at Chavo. But Chavo would not leave the girl dog alone. Goofy ran off in one direction, back towards the horse pens. The others continued to follow the white dog, who would growl at Chavo whenever he got too close. The wound up over at the rancher's house, where the black lab got in to the mix. Both the black lab and Chavo could not stop smelling her. They started to go towards the bull pens, and the rancher's wife came out and called the black lab home. She also tried to call Chavo home, but he was having nothing to do with that! Chavo, the white lab and the black dog took off to the east. I kept thinking I should go chase after Chavo, but I was nervous enough about the white lab that I chose not to. I later felt very guilty about that because Chavo never came home that night. At around 10 pm I heard coyotes and got really nervous. I opened the front door to see a pair of glowing eyes staring back at me. I startled thinking it was a coyote, but it was really Goofy. Adrian was very happy to see him again, and gave him Chavo's food.

Fortunately, Chavo came home in the morning. Chavo and Goofy fight, but they are both able to be on the porch at the same time. Just not too close to each other.
